Kochi, May 20 (NationPress) As Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan celebrated the ninth anniversary of his leadership -- coinciding with the fourth anniversary of his second term -- by cutting a festive cake in Kochi on Tuesday, the absence of a significant Minister from the gathering caught attention.
Vijayan, who first took office in 2016, made history in 2021 by winning a consecutive term -- marking him as the first Chief Minister of Kerala to achieve this feat.
While the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) rejoiced in this landmark, the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) marked the day as a ‘black day’.
Notably absent from Vijayan’s festivities was State Forest Minister A.K. Saseendran from the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), a partner in the LDF.
Upon inquiry regarding his absence, Saseendran failed to provide a satisfactory explanation.
Additionally, Sports Minister V. Abdurahiman, an Independent supported by the Left, was missing amid rising pressure over the proposed visit of Lionel Messi and the World Cup-winning Argentina football team for an exhibition match in Kerala, an event now facing potential uncertainties due to sponsorship issues.
The LDF includes the CPI(M), CPI, JD(S), Kerala Congress (M), Kerala Congress (B), NCP, and Congress (S), with RJD as an ally though not part of the cabinet.
Joining Vijayan at the celebration was Industries Minister P. Rajeeve, a senior CPI(M) leader, who asserted the government is entering its 10th consecutive year with a commendable performance record.
“A third term is on the horizon. People have genuinely benefited, and we’ve consistently supported them. That backing will show up again in 2026,” Rajeeve remarked.
However, Leader of the Opposition in the Kerala Assembly, V.D. Satheesan, countered this optimism.
“I recall the Left’s slogan from 1977: EMS in 1957, EMS in 1967, EMS once more in 1977. But when votes were tallied, the Congress-led Front emerged victorious with over 100 seats. Just wait and see -- we’ll replicate that in 2026,” he stated, noting that Kerala has a 140-member Assembly.
The Congress and all opposition parties commemorated the day as a black day.
