Kochi, Sep 10 (NationPress) In a significant setback for the Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB), the Kerala High Court has mandated the immediate return of the gold-plated panels that were taken from the 'Dwarapalaka' (guardian) sculptures located at the entrance of the sanctum sanctorum of Sabarimala and were sent to Chennai.
This ruling was issued in response to a petition regarding the removal of the gold-plated sheets for necessary repair work.
The court, clearly displeased with the situation, expressed strong criticism towards the TDB, pointing out that such actions had ignored established judicial orders.
A report submitted by the Special Commissioner indicated that the removal of the gold plating was conducted without prior court approval, thus breaching earlier directives that stipulated all gold-related work at the shrine should only be performed at the Sannidhanam and strictly under the supervision of court-appointed officials.
The Special Commissioner labeled this oversight as a serious violation of protocol.
This incident has sparked renewed controversy surrounding temple administration.
In response to the uproar that emerged on Tuesday, TDB President P.S. Prashanth defended the decision, claiming it was made with the consent of the temple Thantri (chief priest).
“The sculptures had visible tarnish, scratches, and even cracks on the legs. Repairs were urgent before the upcoming Mandalam season. The removal was carried out in the presence of the Thiruvabharanam Commissioner and Vigilance officials,” he stated.
The controversy has reignited discussions about the economic value of aged gold.
Some argue that exposure to the elements enhances its worth, raising concerns that even if the same weight of gold is returned, hidden financial benefits could result.
This is not the first instance where Sabarimala has been subjected to such scrutiny.
Previous allegations of irregularities arose when the temple roof was dismantled and re-plated with gold, with critics questioning the transparency in managing temple assets.
With the court now demanding the prompt return of the panels and scheduling further hearings, this episode has once again placed the TDB’s decision-making under intense legal and public scrutiny.
