Kochi, Feb 19 (NationPress) The Kerala High Court on Wednesday delivered a strong rebuke to prominent state BJP figure P.C. George while reserving its decision on his plea for anticipatory bail related to accusations of making hate speech against the Muslim community during a televised debate.
At 73, George has had an extensive political journey, having been part of various political parties before establishing his own, which he subsequently merged with the BJP ahead of the 2024 general elections, elevating him to a senior role within the party in the state.
During the concluding hearing, Justice P.V. Kunhikrishnan affirmed that India is a secular nation and emphasized that individuals should refrain from leveraging caste and religion to sow discord among different communities.
“For a first-time offender, a fine may suffice; for a second violation, penalties may escalate… In cases of repeated offences, a mandatory jail sentence is warranted, especially considering India's secular nature,” the judge remarked.
However, George's legal counsel argued that he did not intentionally promote hatred or animosity towards the Muslim community but rather reacted to provocations during the debate, for which he has since expressed regret.
The state, however, firmly opposed the bail request, asserting that George has a history of similar behaviour.
On Monday, the court noted: “He is not just anyone; he has a political background. When the High Court issues a directive and it is repeatedly flouted, what recourse do we have? If I grant your request and an order is made, tomorrow anyone could disregard court rulings.”
George has previously obtained bail for two infractions, and with the court now reserving its judgment on this latest matter, he will have to await its decision.
