Kerala High Court Rejects Challenge Against Donation of CPI-M Leader's Remains to Medical Institution

Kochi, Dec 18 (NationPress) The Kerala High Court has on Wednesday dismissed a petition against the donation of CPI(M) veteran M. M. Lawrence's remains to the Ernakulam Medical College.

A division bench led by Chief Justice Nitin Jamdar and Justice S. Manu determined that the remains should be transferred to the Medical College, as Lawrence's son confirmed it was his father's wish.

Following Lawrence's passing on September 21, Asha Lawrence sought intervention from the Kerala High Court to stop the transfer of her father's remains to the Medical College.

There was a disturbance during the transfer of the remains to the Medical College, but CPI-M leaders intervened, pushing Asha and her son aside.

Subsequently, she appealed to a single bench, which upheld that the remains should be given to the Medical College.

However, Asha and her sister Sujatha escalated the matter to the division bench.

Responding to the latest ruling, Asha announced their intention to approach the Supreme Court.

"My father's father was also an atheist, and he was interred in the family parish, as was my mother. My father never expressed a desire for a different arrangement. They (my brother and others) may present numerous witnesses to support their claim that their father wanted his remains donated to the Medical College. Neither my sister nor I possess such knowledge, as our father shared everything with us. We intend to appeal to the Supreme Court," Asha stated.

Lawrence passed away at the age of 95.

He was a prominent leader of the Centre of India Trade Unions (CITU) and served as a Lok Sabha member representing Idukki in 1980.
