Thiruvananthapuram, June 6 (NationPress) Kerala Fisheries Minister Saji Cherian has embarked on his journey to France to take part in the Third United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3), being hosted in Nice.
Before his departure, Cherian expressed to IANS that the purpose of this summit is to tackle significant issues facing our oceans and to inspire actionable steps that align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
“I will be participating in a special segment of the 3rd UNOC3 known as the Ocean Rise and Coastal Resilience Summit. Coastal areas are increasingly impacted by climate change, and this meeting seeks to find solutions for adapting to these evolving conditions,” noted Cherian.
He also mentioned that the invitation to this global summit was initially directed toward the Chief Minister.
“The invitation was meant for Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who designated me to represent Kerala. This topic is critically relevant as Kerala has been experiencing the repercussions of climate change, affecting over a million fisher folks in our region,” he shared with IANS.
The Ocean Rise and Coastal Resilience Summit will gather mayors, governors, and administrators from coastal communities globally, alongside representatives from island nations and key stakeholders engaged in climate adaptation initiatives.
Christian Estrosi, the Mayor of Nice and President of the Coalition, emphasized the importance of this assembly.
“By launching the Coalition of coastal cities and regions (Ocean Rise & Coastal Resilience Coalition), we – mayors, governors, and administrators of coastal communities – are forming a collaborative effort to adapt our regions, safeguard our populations, and protect our biodiversity. This Coalition empowers us to collectively confront the greatest challenge of our time: global climate change,” Estrosi stated.
