Kochi, Jan 17 (NationPress) Dairy producers in Kerala need to brace themselves for the forthcoming second White Revolution as announced by PM Modi, stated Union Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying George Kurian on Saturday. He emphasized the essential role of organizations like Milma in preparing farmers for a more competitive and quality-oriented dairy industry.
During the inauguration of the NDDB CALF (Centre for Analysis and Learning in Livestock and Food) Food Testing Laboratory in Kochi, Kurian pointed out that the Prime Minister's vision for the next chapter in dairy development will focus significantly on quality assurance, value addition, and market competitiveness.
In this regard, he mentioned that the creation of an international-standard testing facility in Kerala represents a timely and strategic move for the state’s dairy sector.
Funded entirely by the Central Government at a cost of Rs 8 crore, this laboratory is a collaborative effort between the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) and Milma, the Kerala Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation.
Situated next to the Milma Ernakulam Regional Union office at Edappally, this facility functions as a State Central Laboratory under the National Programme for Dairy Development (NPDD).
As India embarks on the second White Revolution, Kurian acknowledged that healthy competition among dairy cooperatives from different states is unavoidable but expressed optimism that Kerala can lead the way by harnessing robust institutions, technology, and active farmer participation.
According to NDDB Chairman Dr Meenesh C. Shah, the CALF laboratory signifies a critical milestone in fortifying the food quality and safety landscape in the country.
Operating under the same standards and professional practices as top laboratories nationwide, this facility aims to boost trust and technological excellence throughout the dairy value chain.
It boasts ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation and endorsements from organizations such as NABL and FSSAI.
Equipped with state-of-the-art analytical infrastructure and skilled scientists, it provides exhaustive testing of milk and dairy products, encompassing microbiology, wet chemistry, residues, and contaminants.
Initially dedicated to Kerala’s dairy sector, its services will also extend to private entities and food entrepreneurs. In a phased rollout, the laboratory will broaden its testing services to include fruits, vegetables, spices, fish, bakery goods, ready-to-eat meals, and rice, catering to needs from adjacent states.
Beyond testing, the center plans to conduct specialized training sessions for cooperative staff, professionals, and students, reinforcing NDDB’s and Milma's dedication to science-driven growth, farmer empowerment, and public health safeguarding.
