Kochi, June 29 (NationPress) The Leader of Opposition in the Kerala Assembly, V. D. Satheesan, stated on Sunday that recent comments from a senior physician regarding the lack of surgical equipment at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital have validated the concerns that the opposition has consistently expressed about Kerala's public health system.
Harris Chirakkal, the head of Urology at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College, claimed in a social media update on Saturday that necessary surgeries were being delayed due to insufficient equipment.
This revelation sparked intense political responses.
While addressing the media in Paravur, located in the Ernakulam district, Satheesan commented, "The public health infrastructure in Kerala is on ventilator support. Harris Chirakkal's disclosures regarding the lack of surgical tools and the postponed surgeries at a government hospital are alarming."
He emphasized that this problem is not confined to just one department or hospital.
"The scenario is identical in government facilities throughout the state. The opposition has persistently pointed out the deficiencies in medicines and surgical supplies. We raised this issue in the Assembly during January 2024 and March 2025. Each time, Health Minister Veena George dismissed our worries," Satheesan noted.
He criticized the Health Minister's response to the current issue, stating, "Once again, she claims she will request a report. How many times has she made similar assertions? Compiling all the previously requested reports would fill numerous volumes."
Blaming the government for not executing welfare initiatives like the Karunya Benevolent Fund, Hrudyam, and Janani Shishu Suraksha Karyakram, Satheesan asserted that the public healthcare system in the state has crumbled.
"The government's public relations efforts do not align with the harsh reality of the healthcare system," he remarked.
Satheesan alleged that the debts owed to companies supplying medicines and equipment via the Kerala Medical Services Corporation have accumulated to several crores.
"In spite of this, the state Finance Minister reduced Rs 300 crore from the health sector's planned budget," he continued, attributing the neglect of this critical sector to the Pinarayi Vijayan-led government.
The Congress leader announced that a health commission initiated by the Congress-led UDF to investigate sector issues would commence operations on Monday.
This commission, consisting of public health specialists, will compile a report and present it to the government.
Additionally, he mentioned that the opposition plans to host a public health conclave in July to further address these pressing issues.
