Agartala, Jan 29 (NationPress) King George’s Medical University (KGMU) located in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, has made an announcement to establish a gold medal named after Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha.

The Dean of KGMU, Prof. Ranjit Kumar Patil, communicated this decision in a letter addressed to Saha.

According to the letter, “The gold medal will be awarded each year to the top student in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery.”

The correspondence elaborated: “In honor of your esteemed presence at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Faculty of Dental Sciences, on November 26, 2024, and in recognition of your inspirational role and contributions to the institution, the Vice Chancellor of King George’s Medical University has declared the establishment of the ‘Chief Minister Tripura (Manik Saha) Gold Medal.’ This accolade will be given to the postgraduate student with the highest marks in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery during the university’s convocation.

Upon sharing this news on X, the Chief Minister expressed: “A nostalgic moment for me. King George’s Medical University, Lucknow, my alma mater, has created a Gold Medal in my name for outstanding students in Dental Sciences. I am grateful to the entire KGMU community for this honor.”

Saha, who is a qualified oral and maxillofacial surgeon, held significant positions at the Tripura Medical College and B.R. Ambedkar Memorial Teaching Hospital in the state's capital before assuming the role of Chief Minister on May 15, 2022.

He was re-elected as Chief Minister in March 2023. Born on January 8, 1953, Saha completed his Bachelor of Dental Studies at the Government Dental College in Patna and later obtained a Master of Dental Surgery from King George’s Medical College, Lucknow.

Thanks to Saha's initiative, Tripura inaugurated its first dental college in 2022, which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Furthermore, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare previously approved an increase in the number of seats for the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) program at Agartala Government Dental College from 50 to 63 for the academic year 2025-26.
