New Delhi, April 30 (NationPress) Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge expressed his approval of the Central government’s announcement to initiate a caste-based census, deeming it a long-awaited demand from the Opposition and a vital measure towards achieving social justice.
In a statement on X, Kharge remarked, “The Indian National Congress has persistently advocated for a caste census, with Rahul Gandhi emerging as one of its most ardent supporters. The Modi government’s decision to conduct a caste census alongside the national Census is indeed a positive move -- one we've advocated for from the outset.”
Kharge emphasized that he has consistently brought up this topic in Parliament and reached out to Prime Minister Narendra Modi with requests for action.
“The leaders of the INDIA alliance have also reiterated their demand for a caste census multiple times, making it a significant matter during the Lok Sabha election campaign,” he stated.
Criticizing the Prime Minister, Kharge pointed out that PM Modi previously dismissed the demand, accusing the Opposition of fostering division in society. “However, without a caste census, the implementation of impactful social justice and empowerment initiatives is incomplete,” he remarked.
Kharge further questioned the government's financial strategy, highlighting that this year’s Union Budget has allocated a mere Rs 1.575 crore for the Census.
“It raises a legitimate concern -- how and when does the government intend to accomplish this with such a scant allocation?” he queried.
The Congress leader insisted that the Centre must promptly establish a suitable budgetary provision and commence work on both the census and caste census transparently.
“A caste census is imperative. Without fair representation, the concept of inclusive development is merely a facade,” he stated.
The Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs (CCPA), chaired by Prime Minister Modi, took the decision regarding the caste census during a high-profile meeting on Wednesday.
This move holds substantial importance as the caste census has been a key agenda for the Congress-led INDIA alliance, resonating strongly with the general populace.
