Hyderabad, July 4 (NationPress) Union Minister for Coal and Mines G. Kishan Reddy on Friday unveiled the Copper Vision Document and the Aluminium Vision Document during an international conference focused on sustainable and responsible mining practices, hosted by the Indian National Committee of the World Mining Congress.
Reddy highlighted the essential role of copper in India's energy transition, infrastructure development, and green technologies, including electric vehicles and solar energy. He mentioned that the Vision Document serves as a long-term strategy to fulfill the rising domestic demand while ensuring the security of raw materials.
The documents were crafted through extensive consultations with key industry players, including Hindustan Copper Ltd (HCL), Hindalco Industries Ltd, Kutch Copper Ltd, Vedanta Ltd, Indo-Asia Copper Ltd, Lohum, as well as industry associations like the Indian Primary Copper Producers Association (IPCPA) and the International Copper Association (ICA).
The Copper Vision Document anticipates a sixfold surge in demand by 2047 and outlines plans to enhance smelting and refining capacity by 5 million tonnes per annum by 2030. It emphasizes increasing secondary refining, boosting domestic recycling efforts, and minimizing reliance on open-market imports by securing international mineral assets through global collaborations.
During the event, Reddy stated that the Aluminium Vision Document embodies the government's dedication to fostering a self-sufficient and resource-secure India. He underlined the aluminium sector's crucial role in supporting clean energy systems, electric mobility, and advanced infrastructure.
This document was also developed following comprehensive discussions with industry stakeholders, including the National Aluminium Company Ltd (NALCO), Hindalco Industries Ltd, Vedanta Ltd, the Jawaharlal Nehru Aluminium Research Development and Design Centre (JNARDDC), and prominent associations such as the Aluminium Association of India (AAI), the Aluminium Secondary Manufacturers Association (ASMA), and the Metal Recycling Association of India (MRAI).
The Aluminium Vision Document lays out a strategic plan to escalate aluminium production sixfold by 2047. It aims to increase bauxite production capacity to 150 MTPA, double the national aluminium recycling rate, encourage the adoption of low-carbon technologies, and fortify raw material security through targeted policy reforms and institutional frameworks.
Both the Copper and Aluminium Vision Documents align with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of a Viksit Bharat by 2047, establishing a foundation for a globally competitive and environmentally responsible industry, the minister emphasized.
