Kishtwar, Aug 16 (NationPress) Rescue and relief operations have been significantly enhanced in the Kishtwar district of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) following a devastating cloudburst in Chasoti village, which has tragically claimed the lives of at least 60 individuals and left many others unaccounted for.
Teams from the J&K Police, CRPF, Indian Army, SDRF, and local authorities are diligently working around the clock to evacuate survivors, locate the missing, and deliver urgent aid to those affected.
Relief supplies, including food and medical provisions, are being distributed with a special emphasis on vulnerable groups such as children, women, and the elderly.
The cloudburst occurred on Thursday along the Machail Mata Yatra route, resulting in extensive destruction and high casualty rates among both pilgrims and local residents.
On-site officials have reported severe damage, with numerous homes affected. Additionally, several individuals are believed to have been swept away by the sudden influx of water.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Jammu, B.S. Tuti, along with the Divisional Commissioner Jammu Ramesh Kumar, DIG DKR Range Shridhar Patil, Kishtwar DC Pankaj Kumar Sharma, and Kishtwar SSP Naresh Singh, are currently stationed in Chasoti to supervise the ongoing rescue and relief operations.
They have engaged with the local community, addressing their concerns and ensuring them of comprehensive support. The officials underscored that ensuring safety and providing timely assistance are their primary objectives.
Senior officials also visited Atholi Hospital to meet the injured victims of this disaster.

Earlier on Friday, J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah visited the affected area to assess the situation directly. He confirmed that 60 bodies had been recovered so far, while the precise number of missing individuals remains uncertain.
Union Minister of State Jitendra Singh also traveled to Chasoti to evaluate the damage and review the current operations.
