Jammu, Aug 14 (NationPress) A significant cloudburst struck J&K’s Kishtwar district on Thursday, leading to concerns over possible casualties. Officials confirmed that a rescue operation is currently underway in the affected region.
The cloudburst primarily impacted Chositi village located in the Paddar sub-division of Kishtwar.
While reports suggest that up to 10 individuals may have lost their lives in this incident, there has yet to be an official confirmation regarding the casualties.
Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh stated that the cloudburst affected the Chositi area of the Paddar sub-division, and rescue teams have already been mobilized.
He added that teams have been dispatched to assess the damage and provide necessary medical and rescue support.
Dr. Singh assured that his office is receiving continuous updates and is committed to extending all possible assistance to the impacted area.
The L-G of J&K, Manoj Sinha, expressed his sorrow on social media: "I am deeply saddened by the cloudburst in Chositi Kishtwar. My condolences go to the affected families, and I pray for the swift recovery of the injured."
He further instructed Civil, Police, Army, NDRF, and SDRF officials to enhance the rescue and relief operations and ensure that all possible aid is provided to those affected.
Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, Sunil Sharma of the BJP, along with the Deputy Commissioner and the SSP of Kishtwar, has traveled to the affected village to spearhead rescue efforts.
Sharma remarked that the incident transpired at the last point where vehicles are parked, where several temporary shops are established for the Shri Machail Yatra.
He stated that the NDRF and other agencies will conduct extensive relief and rescue operations.
According to the ADC of Kishtwar, the Shri Machail Yatra has been temporarily halted until further notice. He urged the public to remain calm, stating that all available resources, including the SDRF, Red Cross, and other government teams, are actively engaged in the rescue efforts.
This area is characterized as a shadow zone, complicating communication efforts.
Preliminary reports indicate substantial damage to structures, but official confirmation is still pending.
"Indeed, we have received reports of a cloudburst. We have dispatched rescue teams to the village," stated SSP Kishtwar Naresh Singh.
Local residents have noted that the region’s remoteness, heavy rainfall, and poor connectivity are hindering access and updates. Further information is on the way.
