Jammu, Aug 14 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of J&K, Omar Abdullah, has made the decision to cancel the ‘At Home’ event planned for Independence Day, following a devastating cloudburst in Kishtwar that has resulted in the loss of 23 lives and left over 100 individuals injured. The incident occurred in Chositi village, located in the Padder sub-division of Kishtwar district on Thursday.

“Considering the tragedy caused by the cloudburst in Kishtwar, I have opted to cancel the 'At Home' tea gathering scheduled for tomorrow evening,” Abdullah announced via X.

Furthermore, the Chief Minister stated that the government has chosen to forgo the cultural events that were part of the morning Independence Day celebrations.

“Formal events, such as speeches and the march past, will continue as planned,” he clarified.

In response to the cloudburst, the J&K government is ensuring that the injured are swiftly transported to hospitals for necessary treatment, with helicopters deployed for the evacuation of affected individuals.

Minister of State (Prime Minister’s Office) Jitendra Singh confirmed the cloudburst in Chositi and stated that rescue operations are already underway.

Singh indicated that rescue teams have been dispatched to assess damages and provide essential medical assistance.

He assured that his office is receiving regular updates and will extend all possible support to the impacted areas.

The Lieutenant Governor of J&K, Manoj Sinha, expressed his sorrow on X, stating, “I am deeply saddened by the cloudburst in Chositi, Kishtwar. My condolences to the grieving families and prayers for the swift recovery of the injured. I have instructed Civil, Police, Army, NDRF, and SDRF officials to intensify rescue and relief efforts and ensure that all possible support is provided to those affected.”

Earlier, Chief Minister Abdullah mentioned on X: “I spoke with Union Home Minister @AmitShah Sb to update him on the evolving situation in Kishtwar. The reports are grim, and verified information from the affected area is coming in slowly. We are mobilizing all possible resources from within and outside J&K to manage the rescue operations. I will not be engaging with media channels at this time.”

He emphasized that the government will disclose information as it becomes available.

The Leader of the Opposition in the J&K Assembly, Sunil Sharma from the BJP, along with the Deputy Commissioner and SSP of Kishtwar, have proceeded to the impacted village to spearhead rescue operations.

Sharma stated that the incident took place at the last location where vehicles are parked, and where several temporary shops are set up for the Shri Machail Yatra.

According to the Additional Deputy Commissioner of Kishtwar, the Machail Yatra has been suspended until further notice. He urged the public to remain calm, assuring that all available resources, including SDRF, Red Cross, and other government agencies, are actively engaged in the rescue operations.

This area is classified as a shadow zone, which complicates communication. Unverified reports suggest extensive damage to infrastructure and potential casualties, but official confirmation is still pending.

“Indeed, we have received reports of a cloudburst. Rescue teams have been dispatched to the village,” stated SSP Kishtwar Naresh Singh.

Locals have reported that the region's remoteness, combined with heavy rainfall and poor connectivity, is hindering access and timely updates.

Further information is awaited.
