Jammu, Aug 14 (NationPress) The government led by Omar Abdullah has initiated an extensive rescue and relief operation in Chositi village, located in the Padder sub-division of Kishtwar district, following a devastating cloudburst that resulted in the loss of 38 lives and left over 100 individuals injured on Thursday.

According to the Army’s White Knight Corps, which is based in Nagrota, they announced on X, “Relief operations are progressing vigorously. We have deployed over 5 columns of 60 personnel each along with medical teams from #WhiteKnightCorps. They are working diligently alongside #JKP, #SDRF, and various civilian organizations to save lives and support those affected. Search efforts for the missing are ongoing, with medical assistance reaching impacted families.”

Previously, L-G Manoj Sinha stated that rescue and relief efforts in Chashoti are actively in progress.

“Personnel and equipment have been mobilized to the site. Additional teams are being dispatched. I have briefed the Hon'ble Union Home Minister Sh. Amit Shah Ji about the ongoing rescue and relief operations conducted by various agencies. He has pledged all possible assistance,” he shared on X.

In light of the Kishtwar tragedy, J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has opted to cancel the ‘At Home’ event related to Independence Day celebrations.

“Due to the tragic incident resulting from the cloudburst in Kishtwar, I have decided to cancel the 'At Home' gathering scheduled for tomorrow evening,” Abdullah announced on X.

Additionally, he confirmed that there will be no cultural events during the morning Independence Day festivities.

“The formal activities – including speeches and the march past – will proceed as scheduled,” the Chief Minister clarified.

Following the cloudburst, the J&K government, under Abdullah's leadership, has arranged for the transfer of the injured to medical facilities, and helicopters have been deployed for evacuations.

MoS (PMO) Jitendra Singh confirmed that Chositi was impacted by the cloudburst, adding that the rescue operation is already in effect.

Singh mentioned that rescue teams have been dispatched to assess the damage and provide essential medical support.

He assured that his office is receiving consistent updates and will extend all necessary assistance to the affected area.

J&K L-G Manoj Sinha expressed earlier, “I am saddened by the cloudburst in Chositi Kishtwar. My condolences go out to the bereaved families, and I pray for the swift recovery of the injured. I have instructed Civil, Police, Army, NDRF, and SDRF officials to enhance the rescue and relief operations and ensure every possible assistance is given to those affected.”

Previously, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah reported on X: “I have just spoken to the Union Home Minister @AmitShah Sb to update him about the evolving situation in the Kishtwar region of Jammu.

“The situation is serious, and verified information from the area affected by the cloudburst is arriving slowly. We are mobilizing all available resources from both within and outside J&K to manage the rescue operations. I will refrain from speaking to media outlets or news agencies.”

He assured that the government will disseminate information as it becomes available.

Leader of the Opposition in the J&K Assembly, Sunil Sharma of the BJP, along with the Deputy Commissioner and SSP of Kishtwar, has traveled to the affected village to spearhead rescue efforts.

Sharma indicated that the incident occurred at the last accessible point for four-wheelers where several temporary shops were set up for the Shri Machail Yatra.

According to the ADC of Kishtwar, the Machail Yatra has been put on hold until further notice. He urged the public to remain calm, assuring that all available resources, including SDRF, Red Cross, and other governmental bodies, are actively engaged in the rescue operations.

The affected area falls within a shadow zone, complicating communication. Unverified reports suggest substantial damage to structures and a potential loss of life, although official confirmation is pending.

“Yes, we have received reports of a cloudburst. We have dispatched rescue teams to the village,” stated SSP Kishtwar Naresh Singh.

Locals have indicated that the region’s remoteness, heavy rains, and poor connectivity are obstructing access and updates.
