Kolendranath Mandi Defects to BJP: A Game-Changer in Jangalmahal Politics
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, March 26 (NationPress) Kolendranath Mandi, who was previously affiliated with the Trinamool Congress and served on the Purulia Zilla Parishad, made a significant move by joining the Bharatiya Janata Party on Thursday.
His formal induction took place at the state Bharatiya Janata Party’s office in Salt Lake, Kolkata, where he was welcomed by the party's state president, Samik Bhattacharya, along with Purulia Member of Parliament and state BJP General Secretary, Jyotirmay Singh Mahato.
Kolendranath, a prominent name in Santali literature, has been active in writing poetry, short stories, plays, and essays since 1978. He also engages in research focused on Santali linguistics.
For numerous years, he has championed the fight against social issues, including the harmful practice of witch-hunting.
In the most recent 2023 Panchayat elections, he secured a Zilla Parishad seat on a Trinamool Congress ticket from the Bandwan block in Purulia.
During his induction, Kolendranath mentioned that his literary contributions are incorporated into the curricula at both Sidho-Kanho-Birsha University and Jhargram Sadhu Ramchand Murmu University. Notably, he was honored with the esteemed Bangabhushan award from the Mamata Banerjee government last February.
Following his transition to the Bharatiya Janata Party, MP Jyotirmay Mahato stated that Kolendranath Mandi is not only a key leader in the Jangalmahal region but also a significant advocate for tribal language and culture.
Mahato emphasized that Mandi’s choice to join the BJP sends a crucial message to the tribal communities in Jangalmahal, representing a new beacon for the indigenous population.
He criticized the Trinamool regime, asserting that the tribal community has suffered from neglect and underdevelopment.
Mahato further expressed that the BJP is aware of the growing discontent regarding how Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's administration has treated the country's first tribal President, Droupadi Murmu. This sentiment, he argues, will influence the forthcoming Assembly elections.
It’s worth noting that Ajit Mahato, a significant figure in the Kurmi movement, had previously joined the BJP. In this election cycle, his son, Rajesh, has been nominated as a candidate from the Gopiballavpur constituency in the Jhargram district.
Additionally, the BJP has put forth Biswajit Mahato, another Kurmi movement leader and close ally of Ajit, as its candidate for the Joypur Assembly seat in Purulia.
