C. C. Mukundan, CPI MLA, Joins BJP After Ticket Denial in Kerala
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Thrissur (Kerala), March 16 (NationPress) In a major political shift ahead of the Assembly elections in Kerala, C. C. Mukundan, a current CPI MLA, has joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) after his party denied him a second consecutive nomination. Mukundan, representing Nattika in the Thrissur district, had been part of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) until this point.
After the Communist Party of India (CPI) chose not to renominate him for the upcoming elections, the seasoned politician began to seek alternative paths.
Reports indicate that Mukundan first approached the Congress party, aiming to secure a position within the United Democratic Front (UDF). However, this effort faced significant opposition from local Congress leaders in both Nattika and the broader Thrissur area, leading the party to pull back from any potential collaboration.
With the Congress option closed, Mukundan ultimately chose to align himself with the BJP.
Upon announcing his decision, Mukundan expressed his complete trust in the BJP leadership, stating he would adhere to any decisions made regarding his future political involvement. "I have absolute faith in the BJP leadership, which will determine the future direction of my political career, including the possibility of contesting from Nattika," he affirmed.
BJP leader B. Gopalakrishnan confirmed Mukundan's welcome into the party, calling it a positive step for the expansion of the BJP's influence in Kerala.
Mukundan’s transition is noteworthy as it marks the second prominent leader to switch from the CPI to the BJP in recent weeks. Earlier, K. Ajith, a two-time former CPI legislator, also made the move to the BJP. Additionally, S. Rajendran, a three-time former CPI-M legislator, joined the BJP last month.
These transitions occur as the BJP aims to bolster its foothold in Kerala by attracting leaders from both the Left and Congress factions.
Political analysts suggest that Mukundan’s shift could significantly alter the competitive landscape in Nattika, particularly if the BJP opts to nominate him from the constituency where he currently serves as MLA.
