Thiruvananthapuram, Jan 10 (NationPress) In a notable political shift within Kerala, senior CPI(M) figure and three-term former Devikulam MLA S. Rajendran is poised to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), representing a significant change in a constituency traditionally viewed as a Left stronghold.

Rajendran, a well-known leader hailing from Idukki district, confirmed on Saturday that he recently engaged in discussions with BJP state president Rajeev Chandrasekhar. Speculation regarding his potential switch to the BJP has been ongoing for almost three years.

Commenting on the meeting, Rajendran stated he did not present any personal demands nor set conditions for joining the party. Previously, he also traveled to New Delhi to confer with senior BJP leader Prakash Javadekar, suggesting ongoing interactions with the BJP’s central leadership.

Rajendran has had an extensive political journey within the CPI(M). He first secured a seat in the Kerala Legislative Assembly from the Devikulam constituency in 2006 and successfully defended it in the elections of 2011 and 2016. Before this, he was president of the Idukki District Panchayat in 2003, establishing himself as a key political figure in the region.

However, his rapport with the CPI(M) soured following the 2021 Assembly elections. Allegations arose that he had undermined LDF candidate Raja in Devikulam. An internal party investigation later affirmed these claims, resulting in Rajendran's suspension from the CPI(M) for a year in 2022.

Despite persistent attempts by party leaders to reintegrate him, Rajendran has shown little interest in returning. During subsequent parliamentary and panchayat elections, speculation about his imminent transition to the BJP grew, although he consistently asserted that no final decision had been made.

It is now reported that Rajendran is expected to formally join the BJP at a gathering in Munnar, led by senior BJP state officials.

Point of View

S. Rajendran's potential move to the BJP underscores the shifting political dynamics in Kerala, traditionally a Left stronghold. As political affiliations evolve, this development could signal a larger trend in voter sentiments and party strategies across the state.
