Kolkata, June 28 (NationPress) - A security guard employed at the law college in Kasba, South Kolkata, has been taken into custody by Investigating Officials following the rape of a female student that occurred on the evening of June 25. Kolkata Police confirmed this development on Saturday, stating that the security guard is the only witness to the incident as per the victim's police complaint.
This individual was apprehended on Friday night for questioning, as his testimony is expected to play a critical role in the investigation and in formulating charges against the three suspects already detained in the case.
According to the victim's statements made to the police when she filed her complaint on Wednesday night, the security guard was a “helpless witness” who could not intervene to help her.
The victim reported that after being forcibly taken to the guard room within the college grounds, the security guard present was ejected from the room, allowing the three men to sexually assault her.
However, a source within the city police noted that there were inconsistencies in the security guard's statements, prompting his detention for further questioning.
Additionally, police insiders revealed that the accused allegedly recorded the assault and threatened to disseminate the video on social media if the victim spoke out.
Authorities are currently investigating whether these individuals shared the video with others.
Reports indicate that the three suspects—Monojit Mishra, Zaib Ahmed, and Pramit Mukhopadhyay—are associated with the Trinamool Congress’s student wing, Trinamool Chhatra Parishad. Social media has been flooded with images of Mishra alongside prominent Trinamool Congress leaders. While Mishra is a former student of the law college, the other two are current students.
All three have been remanded to police custody until July 1.
