West Bengal Police on Tuesday, 9 June conducted a search operation at Suruchi Sangha club in New Alipore, south Kolkata, taking arrested accused Swarup Biswas to the premises as part of an ongoing investigation into a molestation case. The club, long associated with the Biswas brothers, has become the focal point of a widening probe following a change of government in the state.

Investigators escorted Swarup Biswas to the Suruchi Sangha clubhouse on Tuesday afternoon. Prior to the search, central forces had cordoned off the premises and surrounding areas in New Alipore. Swarup, brother of former state minister Aroop Biswas, was arrested a few days ago on molestation charges. Aroop Biswas is reportedly absconding and has not yet been taken into custody.

What Investigators Found

On the previous Monday, police had recovered multiple electronic devices and documents from Aroop Biswas's flat in New Alipore. After breaching a digital lock, investigators seized 14 mobile phones, two iPads, and several documents linked to an association connected to the Bengali film industry. Police stated the devices may contain crucial evidence in the case.

Notably, last Friday, protesters had gathered outside the Suruchi Sangha premises, broke the lock, and entered the building. They reached an upper room where a king-size bed and a luxurious attached toilet were found, drawing sharp public attention.

Allegations of Irregularities

Local residents have alleged large-scale embezzlement of government goods through the club. A room adjacent to the clubhouse reportedly contained a large number of bottles of government-supplied 'Pranadhara' water and several saris, fuelling allegations of misappropriation. It has also been alleged that a separate building on the club's premises was constructed by encroaching on land belonging to the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC), triggering public outrage in the area.

Several allegations have also surfaced against Swarup Biswas within the Bengali film industry, according to reports, broadening the scope of scrutiny beyond the molestation case.
