Bengaluru, July 28 (NationPress) The Karnataka BJP has sharply criticized the Congress-led administration in Karnataka regarding the insufficient supply of urea fertilizer, which is causing a crisis for farmers during this crucial cultivation period.
While addressing reporters at the BJP’s state headquarters, Jagannath Bhavan in Bengaluru, N. Ravikumar, the Chief Whip of the Opposition in the Legislative Council, remarked: "In the previous administration, a buffer stock fund of Rs 1,000 crore was established to prevent fertilizer shortages and alleviate financial burdens on the state government for fertilizer purchases. Yet, under the current Congress regime, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has allocated only Rs 400 crore for maintaining this buffer stock. How can farmers expect to receive sufficient fertilizer with such a drastically reduced amount?"
Ravikumar accused the Congress government of failing to deliver timely urea fertilizer supplies to farmers, prompting the BJP to initiate statewide protests.
He highlighted that North and South Karnataka require fertilizers for crops like ragi, jowar, maize, and green gram. However, the state government is not ensuring timely delivery of urea. With green manure availability low in North Karnataka, farmers are heavily dependent on urea and are now facing serious challenges due to its scarcity, he stated.
Following heavy rainfall across all districts, there has been a noticeable increase in crop sowing activities. Farmers express that applying fertilizers now could enhance yields; otherwise, their crops may fail.
He accused the government of neglecting farmers' concerns. Thousands are waiting at fertilizer distribution centers in every taluk and district, he noted, urging the government to promptly supply urea.
Ravikumar further asserted that the Congress government has failed to promote nano urea as a substitute for conventional urea. Awareness among farmers regarding the use of nano urea in the absence of regular urea should have been prioritized, but it has not occurred.
The government is also neglecting to provide subsidies for the machinery needed to spray nano urea. The distribution of bio-fertilizers, which convert atmospheric nitrogen into soil nutrients, has also decreased. There has been no assistance for farmers producing green manure. He claimed that the Siddaramaiah-led administration has completely overlooked the needs of farmers.
The number of cattle is declining, and instead of aiding livestock farmers, the government seems to be supporting cattle theft. No assistance has been given for dairy farming, and even incentives for milk producers have been halted, further exacerbating farmers' struggles, Ravikumar alleged.
Farmers are not receiving quality fertilizers. Private companies are providing substandard seeds, resulting in lackluster crop yields. Despite favorable rainfall this season, without quality seeds and fertilizers, the sowing season could be lost, leading to crop failure. The government has utterly neglected farmers, Ravikumar asserted.
During the BJP governments led by B.S. Yediyurappa and Basavaraj Bommai, farmers received a total of Rs 10,000 under the Kisan Samman scheme—Rs 6,000 from the Center and Rs 4,000 from the state. The current Congress government has discontinued the Rs 4,000 state support, which he claims is an injustice to farmers.
When discussing drought relief, he pointed out that the Center had released Rs 3,454 crore, yet not a single paisa has been utilized for the benefit of farmers. These funds have allegedly been diverted for other uses, leading to accusations of betrayal against the Congress government.
