Bengaluru, July 26 (NationPress) In light of the ongoing fertiliser shortage, particularly urea, at a pivotal time for farmers following recent rains, the Karnataka BJP has signaled its intent to initiate protests against the Congress-led government’s lack of preparedness and its ineffective attempts to shift blame onto the Centre regarding fertiliser supplies.
During a press conference in Bengaluru, BJP State President and MLA B.Y. Vijayendra remarked, "On Friday, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah sent a letter to Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare and Chemicals & Fertilisers, J.P. Nadda, concerning the urea shortage. I would like to ask the CM, why was there no preparation? The monsoon commenced 20 to 25 days ago. The meteorological department had provided early warnings as well. Yet, due to the lack of action from the Agriculture Minister and the state government, farmers are now protesting across Karnataka."
Farmers in Bidar, Kalaburagi, Gadag, Koppal, and Davanagere have taken to the streets in protest. While Siddaramaiah asserts that there is a shortage and that the Centre is uncooperative, Vijayendra countered, saying, "By the end of July, the Centre has dispatched 8.73 metric tonnes of fertilisers to Karnataka when our expectation was 6.31 lakh metric tonnes, surpassing the state’s requirements. The issue lies in the state's lack of preparation. In Kalaburagi, where tur dal is cultivated, the government should have anticipated the quantity of fertilisers necessary to be stocked and considered the needs of other districts. This is a clear failure of the state government and the Agriculture Minister," he emphasized.
He further pointed out that the Congress-led government is attempting to conceal their failures by blaming the Centre, announcing that the BJP will organize protests through its Farmers' Wing statewide.
“I urge the Agriculture Minister to manage this situation with care. Fertilisers are being sold on the black market, which we know occurs wherever there is a Congress government. Farmers are being forced to purchase seeds at inflated prices, and an artificial fertiliser shortage is being manipulated,” he stated.
When questioned about the fertiliser shortage, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah responded in Hassan on Saturday, noting that the state has experienced good rainfall, leading to increased maize cultivation among farmers and a consequent surge in demand.
This situation has intensified tensions between the Congress-led Karnataka government and the Centre. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has formally requested Union Minister J.P. Nadda to expedite the supply of 1.65 lakh metric tonnes of urea fertiliser according to the state’s allocation for the welfare of farmers.
Union Minister for Food, Public Distribution, and Consumer Affairs, Pralhad Joshi, has sharply criticized Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, accusing him of misleading the people of Karnataka with untrue claims regarding the supply of fertilisers.
