Bengaluru, July 4 (NationPress) In a significant advancement in the ongoing inquiry into the targeted murder of BJP Yuva Morcha member Praveen Kumar Nettaru by members of the outlawed Popular Front of India (PFI), the National Investigation Agency (NIA) apprehended a crucial suspect who had been on the run for the past two years.
An official announcement reported that Abdul Rahaman was detained by an NIA team at Kannur International Airport in Kerala upon his return from Qatar.
A total of four individuals, including Abdul Rahaman and two other fugitives, have been charged by the NIA in this case as of April this year, bringing the total number of charges to 28, according to the NIA.
The NIA also offered rewards for information leading to the capture of six absconders. Abdul Rahaman had a reward of Rs 4 Lakh associated with his arrest.
Investigations revealed that Abdul Rahaman had, under the orders of PFI leaders, willingly sheltered the main perpetrators and others involved in the incident. Following the arrests of the assailants, he fled to Qatar, as stated by the NIA.
Praveen Nettaru was heinously murdered with sharp weapons by PFI members on July 26, 2022, in Bellare village of Sullia Taluk in Mangaluru District.
The assassination was part of a broader plot intended to instill fear among the populace and incite communal discord and unrest within society, the NIA noted.
The NIA, which had re-registered the case on August 4, 2022, is actively pursuing the remaining absconders, according to the statement.
The murder of Praveen Nettaru led to prolonged communal tensions in the coastal region of Karnataka, triggering a series of retaliatory killings and stabbing incidents in the Mangaluru area.
Mohammad Fazil was killed by a gang associated with Hindu activist Suhas Shetty in retaliation for Praveen Nettaru's murder.
Recently, Suhas Shetty was murdered in a similar act of vengeance. Following his death, a gang killed Imtiyaz, a pick-up driver and the secretary of a local mosque, to avenge Shetty's demise.
