Kolkata, Jan 14 (NationPress) The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has apprehended a fugitive accused of assaulting the convoy of BJP leader Priyangu Pandey in Bhatpara, located in the North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal.

The detainee has been named Md. Amir, also known as Sonu, as per the NIA's statement.

The NIA's announcement indicated that a non-bailable warrant was in effect against the accused concerning this incident.

Previously, in November of last year, the NIA disclosed that 12 individuals were charged in this case.

A chargesheet was submitted to a special NIA court in Kolkata in November against these 12 individuals, citing multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Arms Act of 1959, and the Explosives Substances Act of 1908.

According to a November statement from the NIA, investigations revealed that all 12 accused were significantly involved in the conspiracy behind the attack on Priyangu Pandey's convoy.

His driver, Ravi Verma, and a close aide, Rabi Singh, sustained gunshot wounds during the assault.

The incident occurred as Pandey and his team approached Gate No. 3 of the Anglo Indian Jute Mill staff quarters in Bhatpara en route to the residence of former BJP Lok Sabha member from Barrackpore constituency, Arjun Singh.

The assailants targeted the convoy using explosives and firearms.

The NIA investigation has unveiled a criminal conspiracy surrounding the attack, which is elaborated in the chargesheet.

Following the incident, Pandey accused members of the ruling Trinamool Congress of orchestrating the premeditated assault.

The Union Ministry of Home Affairs mandated the transfer of the case from the West Bengal police to the NIA, citing concerns over public safety due to the use of explosives and firearms during the assault.
