Mumbai, July 9 (NationPress) Landslide-prone areas within Mumbai have previously been examined by the Geological Survey of India, and these hazardous locations will undergo re-evaluation, as stated by Disaster Management Minister Girish Mahajan during the Question Hour in the Legislative Assembly on Wednesday.
In response to a query posed by Sunit Raut regarding the safety of residents in the city's hilly regions, Minister Mahajan disclosed that back in 2017, the Geological Survey of India had assessed 249 locations in Mumbai. Out of these, 74 sites were identified as dangerous, with 46 classified as extremely hazardous. Notably, 40 of these extremely dangerous locations are situated in the suburbs of Mumbai.
The Minister also mentioned that preventive measures have been initiated in areas susceptible to landslides based on recommendations from IIT Powai. He noted that geo-netting and protective wall constructions have been completed at potential landslide sites in Suryanagar, Vikhroli.
Approximately 47 projects valued at Rs 11.63 crore have been launched in this region, with 45 completed and two currently underway.
Furthermore, the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation has been notified via the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation to commence the geo-netting work, which has been initiated expeditiously with funds allocated for the same.
Minister Mahajan indicated that 177 projects have received approval in hazardous zones across Ghatkopar and Bhandup for the fiscal years 2022-23 and 2023-24. Of these, 113 projects have been finalized, 38 are ongoing, and 26 are in the tendering phase. He assured that funds will be allocated for protective walls and geo-netting in these perilous areas.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis informed the state council that the Agriculture Department's capabilities will be enhanced to ensure that farmers receive quality seeds, fertilizers, and agricultural inputs.
He indicated that necessary modifications will be made to empower the Agriculture Department to conduct inspections, addressing concerns over the diminishing authority of the Zilla Parishad's agricultural division.
In response to inquiries about the confiscation of HTBT seeds, Minister of State Dr. Pankaj Bhoyar explained that a license has been granted for the sale of genetically modified seeds, however, there is no authorization for the sale of cotton 'HTBT' seeds.
With the current sowing season in progress and a significant quantity of 'HTBT' seeds being stored, the Agriculture Commissioner issued instructions to the district administration on March 7, 2025, to seize unauthorized 'HTBT' seeds. Consequently, such seeds have been confiscated, and legal action has been initiated against the respective seed producers, stated Minister Bhoyar.
