YSR birth anniversary: AP Governor, Telangana CM lead tributes to 'people's leader'
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Leaders across the political spectrum on 8 July paid tributes to Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, former Chief Minister of undivided Andhra Pradesh, on his birth anniversary, remembering him as a visionary who placed welfare of the poor at the centre of governance.
Governor and Chief Minister Pay Homage
Andhra Pradesh Governor S. Abdul Nazeer described Dr YSR as 'a visionary leader and a champion of the people,' crediting him with implementing several people-friendly welfare schemes and developmental initiatives. 'His dedication to the welfare of farmers, the weaker sections of society, and the underprivileged left a lasting impact on the lives of millions. His life and work remain an example of dedicated public service and visionary leadership,' the Governor said.
Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy also paid his respects, stating that the welfare programmes introduced by Dr YSR 'remain etched in everyone's hearts.' The Chief Minister, accompanied by Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy, Nalgonda MP Raghuveer Reddy, and Ramagundam MLA Raj Thakur, offered tributes at Dr YSR's portrait at his Jubilee Hills residence in Hyderabad.
Deputy CM Highlights Legacy of Welfare Schemes
Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka offered floral tributes at Dr YSR's statue at City Centre, Panjagutta, and participated in YSR Jayanti celebrations. Vikramarka called Dr YSR 'a great leader who still lives forever in people's hearts,' adding that his welfare model 'continues to serve as a model for the entire nation even today.'
Vikramarka specifically highlighted schemes credited to Dr YSR's tenure: Aarogyasri health insurance, 108 emergency services, Indiramma houses, social security pensions, fee reimbursement for students, free electricity for farmers, and Pawala Vaddi low-interest loans for women. He noted that these programmes 'have provided assurance to lakhs of poor families.'
The Deputy Chief Minister also recalled Dr YSR's padayatra — a foot march across the state to understand ground-level problems — as the defining act that established him as a people's leader. 'Signing the free electricity file for farmers immediately after taking the oath as Chief Minister is a testament to YSR's commitment to farmers,' Vikramarka said.
Other Leaders Who Attended
The commemorations drew a wide gathering of political figures, including Minister Sridhar Babu, government advisor Mohammed Ali Shabbir, Planning Commission Vice Chairman Chinna Reddy, MLA Danam Nagender, and former MP KVP Ramachandra Rao, among others.
Why YSR's Legacy Endures
Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy served as Chief Minister of undivided Andhra Pradesh and is widely credited with expanding the state's social safety net during his tenure. His welfare architecture — spanning health, housing, agriculture, and women's credit — has been frequently cited by successive governments across both successor states, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, as a benchmark. The cross-party nature of tributes on his birth anniversary reflects the breadth of his political and popular reach, even years after his passing.
