Srinagar, April 15, (NationPress) The President of the Peoples Conference, Sajad Lone, launched a fierce critique of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday after the CM admitted to procedural mistakes in the handling of the Waqf Bill by the J&K Assembly.
Lone highlighted that he had raised concerns regarding this matter on April 7 but faced backlash from members of the ruling party.
Referring to his own post on X from April 7, when he described the NC members' actions as a “song and dance performance,” Lone stated: “What CM Sahib has acknowledged today aligns precisely with what I tweeted on the 7th of April. For expressing the same concerns, the NC members hurled various political insults at me.”
In his previous X post, which he called “a reminder to my friends in NC,” he articulated that an adjournment motion serves as a censure motion against the government.
“It’s intended to discuss the government’s failures. You cannot initiate an adjournment motion concerning the Waqf Bill,” he asserted.
Lone accused the Assembly of criminal negligence regarding the Waqf Bill.
“This is a serious offense. Those who protested for three consecutive days and prevented any business from being conducted must explain their actions. Who instructed a group of 50 legislators to engage in disruptive behavior for three days?” he questioned.
Expressing his disbelief at what he termed a collective oversight, Lone challenged the experience and knowledge of NC’s senior lawmakers.
“I refuse to believe that the oldest party in J&K, with its most seasoned MLAs, was unaware of their actions. This is my second term; if I recognized it and tweeted about it then, how could your experienced MLAs not know? Surely, you have a number of lawyers among the 50 legislators who were acting like excited children, climbing on desks,” he remarked.
Lone questioned whether the Chief Minister was implying that collectively, the Speaker, the Chief Minister, and all those NC legislators and lawyers failed to notice a significant error for three days.
“Are you suggesting that the collective intelligence of your legislators is such that a glaring mistake went unnoticed for three days?” he added.
Lone accused the government of orchestrating the entire incident to avoid a resolution condemning the Waqf Bill.
“Be honest. This was your plan. The entire disruption was orchestrated by you. You did not want a resolution from the J&K Assembly. You are complicit in this offense against the Muslims of India,” he asserted.
He further criticized the NC leadership for stifling the minor opposition.
“You were not interested in passing the resolution and prevented the small opposition from even making a statement by instructing your ‘geniuses’ to shout, rendering any rational voice inaudible,” he stated.
Reflecting on Omar Abdullah’s absence from the Assembly, Lone noted, “Where were you for three days? I know you spent some time in Tulip Garden.”
Clarifying the procedural alternatives, Lone stressed, “Don’t blame your MLAs. It had to be a government resolution and had to be proposed by a cabinet member with the leader of the house’s consent. Government resolutions do not require a notice period, nor are they bound by balloting procedures.”
Calling the incident a significant political defeat, Lone demanded accountability and corrective measures.
“This is a significant loss, and you should apologize. Request the Speaker for an emergency one-day session. He possesses the authority to suspend all rules and permit a resolution.”
He concluded by urging the Chief Minister to apologize and request the Speaker for an emergency one-day session to appropriately address the Waqf Bill matter.
