Chennai, Feb 13 (NationPress) At least four individuals found themselves trapped beneath a pile of sand when a lorry flipped over in Kondaiyampalayam, located in Tamil Nadu's Salem district, according to officials on Thursday.
The mishap took place as the lorry, en route from Kengavalli to Thammampatti, lost control and overturned at a bus stop. The victims, identified as Selvi, Thangal, Thangammal, and Kala, were extricated by revenue officials with help from the fire department and immediately transported to Arthur Government Hospital in Salem for medical care.
The driver of the lorry, Honest Raj from Kadambur, fled the scene. The Kengavalli police have filed a case and are probing the incident, including determining the accident's cause. A search for the driver is currently underway.
Tamil Nadu has seen a notable decrease in fatal road accidents. In comparison to the prior year, the number of fatalities from road incidents reduced by 273 in 2024. Authorities credit this improvement to remedial measures in accident-prone areas (known as Black Spots), stricter traffic regulation enforcement, and vigorous action against drunk driving.
State Police Chief Sankar Jiwal recently remarked that despite the rise in both human and vehicle counts, along with the expansion of road networks, the Tamil Nadu Police have launched several significant initiatives aimed at improving road safety. In 2023, the state recorded 18,347 fatalities in 17,526 road incidents.
In 2024, those figures fell to 18,074 deaths in 17,282 accidents. An analysis of the fatal accident cases from 2023 showed that driver error was to blame for 16,800 of the 17,526 incidents. To mitigate accidents, the Highway Patrol Mobile Application has been broadly employed to promote awareness and enforce road safety regulations. Moreover, police conducted a field assessment to locate 6,165 Black Spots, evaluating ground conditions based on vehicle density, traffic environment, and accident history.
In partnership with the State Highways Department, safety engineering measures were put in place, including speed reductions at 3,165 locations. Most urban areas and districts in Tamil Nadu have since reported a decline in road accidents. Highway patrol vehicles have been instrumental in saving lives, rescuing 12,629 critically injured accident victims and ensuring prompt medical care during the crucial Golden Hour.
In addition to enforcing traffic regulations to curb reckless driving, authorities have organized thousands of awareness campaigns to educate the public on responsible road use.
