Chennai, April 13 (NationPress) Four individuals tragically lost their lives when a car collided head-on with a government bus near Tiruvannamalai in Tamil Nadu on Sunday.
The incident took place around 3:30 a.m. close to Kattukulam, near Somasipadi village, along the route to Tindivanam.
Upon notification, the Kilpennathur Police swiftly arrived at the scene and transported the bodies to the Tiruvannamalai Government Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examinations.
A case has been filed, and an investigation is currently underway to determine the cause of the tragedy.
Despite this unfortunate event, Tamil Nadu has seen a significant decrease in fatal road accidents over the previous year.
In 2024, the state reported 18,074 fatalities in 17,282 fatal accidents - a reduction of 273 deaths compared to 2023, which recorded 18,347 deaths in 17,526 fatal accidents.
State Police Chief Sankar Jiwal credited the decline to several road safety initiatives, including stricter enforcement of traffic regulations, focused actions against drunk driving, and remedial measures at accident-prone locations.
An analysis of the 2023 data indicated that driver error was the cause of 16,800 out of the 17,526 fatal incidents.
To combat this issue, police conducted field surveys and identified 6,165 hazardous locations, considering vehicle volume, traffic conditions, and accident history.
In collaboration with the State Highways Department, safety measures were established at 3,165 sites.
The Highway Patrol Mobile Application has also played a vital role in raising awareness and ensuring better enforcement.
Moreover, highway patrol teams have rescued 12,629 severely injured accident victims, enabling them to receive medical attention within the critical Golden Hour.
In addition to enforcement, police have organized thousands of public awareness campaigns to encourage responsible road behavior. Consequently, numerous cities and districts within Tamil Nadu have reported a consistent decrease in road accidents.
