New Delhi, Aug 1 (NationPress) The Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) has been identified in cattle across 10 states in India as of 2025, according to reports presented to Parliament by the Centre.
LSD is a transboundary animal disease that has become a major concern in India due to its profound effects on cattle health and the dairy industry. This disease is marked by the appearance of skin nodules all over the body, fever, swollen lymph nodes, reduced milk production, and challenges in mobility.
In a written update to the Rajya Sabha, Union Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Prof. S.P. Singh Baghel, mentioned that as of July 24, “LSD has been confirmed in 10 states, including Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Assam, Mizoram, Maharashtra, and Karnataka.”
“Currently, active cases are only reported in Maharashtra,” he noted. There is also a resurgence of LSD cases in Gujarat, affecting 300 cattle across eight districts.
“Since 2022, over 28 crore animals have been vaccinated against LSD,” Baghel stated.
The Minister highlighted that vaccination rates were highest in Uttar Pradesh (4.6 crore), followed by Maharashtra (4.13 crore) and Madhya Pradesh (3 crore).
The transmission of the LSD virus is mainly due to vector bites, with mosquitoes, ticks, and other blood-sucking insects playing a vital role.
Over the past two years, approximately 200,000 cattle have succumbed nationwide, while millions have seen a decline in milk production due to LSD.
Importantly, financial support is allocated to states based on their requirements for vaccine procurement for LSD and other disease control initiatives through the Assistance to States for Control of Animal Diseases (ASCAD) under the Livestock Health and Disease Control Programme (LHDCP).
“A total of Rs. 196.61 crore has been released to states/UTs for the year 2024-25,” Baghel concluded.
