Amravati (Maharashtra), June 27 (NationPress) Amid mounting pressure from opposition and farmer groups, Revenue Minister and Maharashtra BJP chief Chandrashekhar Bawankule emphasized on Friday that individuals who possess layouts, farmhouses, and travel in luxury vehicles will not qualify for the farm loan waiver. He asserted that the MahaYuti government would announce its decisions regarding the loan waiver at the right time.
Bawankule's statement follows Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis's recent remarks highlighting the government's commitment to implement the farm loan waiver, assuring that they remain steadfast in their promises.
“The MahaYuti government assured farmers that they would be exempt from electricity bills for the next five years, a promise we have fulfilled. Our focus is on waiving loans for genuine farmers in need. Those who have taken loans for agriculture to purchase luxury vehicles like Mercedes, or those owning layouts and farmhouses, will not receive loan waivers. We believe it is essential that only the genuinely needy benefit from this initiative,” Bawankule stated during the launch of several government schemes.
He further noted that the government currently provides Rs 1,500 monthly to eligible beneficiaries under the Ladki Bahin Yojana, with plans to raise it to Rs 2,100 monthly.
Bawankule revealed that a high-level committee would be established to analyze the current situation and make recommendations regarding loan waivers. An announcement about this committee will come during the upcoming monsoon session of the state legislature, starting on June 30 in Mumbai, with decisions on loan waivers pending the committee's findings.
“We discussed the loan waiver and the committee’s formation with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday. I also met with former minister Bachchu Kadu, who is currently on a fast demanding a farm loan waiver among other requests. The matter is under serious consideration by the government,” he added.
State Congress chief Harshwardhan Sapkal recently criticized the government for its delays in announcing the promised loan waiver by MahaYuti during the assembly elections, questioning why no committee was mentioned at that time. “It appears the government lacks the intent to extend waivers, aiming merely to weather the storm. The promised Rs 2,100 under the Ladki Bahin scheme has not yet been distributed, indicating a lack of sincerity,” he asserted.
Veteran Congress leader Balasaheb Thorat pointed out that while the state government has ample funds for highway development, it claims to lack the resources for a farm loan waiver.
