Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, Oct 30 (NationPress) Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced on Thursday that the MahaYuti government will reach a decision regarding the farm loan waiver by June 30, 2026. He emphasized that the current focus is on directly transferring financial assistance to the bank accounts of farmers affected by heavy rains and floods.
During a meeting with former minister and Prahar Sanghatana leader Bachchu Kadu, who has been protesting in Nagpur for three days demanding the waiver, the Chief Minister assured that the government supports the initiative.
Fadnavis stated that a nine-member committee will be established, led by Pravin Pardeshi, CEO of the Maharashtra Institution for Transformation, to provide both short-term and long-term strategies aimed at alleviating farmers' debts and implementing the loan waiver.
The committee is tasked with proposing methods for permanently freeing farmers from debt.
The Chief Minister indicated that the government will make a decision on the loan waiver after reviewing the committee's recommendations before the June deadline.
He acknowledged the approval from farmer organizations to discuss the loan waiver, while also noting the financial challenges faced by the government.
Despite these challenges, substantial assistance has already been provided to those impacted by adverse weather conditions, totaling around Rs 8,500 crore, with Rs 6,000 crore already reaching farmers. The remaining funds are expected to be disbursed within the next 10-15 days.
Following the meeting, Kadu expressed optimism, stating, “The meeting was productive. We sought a timeline for the farm loan waiver, and the government has committed to it. The decision will come after the committee's report by June 30, 2026.”
He added, “We appreciate the discussions and will address other demands with the relevant ministers. We thank all political parties and farmer organizations for their support during this agitation.”
Dr. Ajit Navale, Secretary of the All India Kisan Sabha, noted, “The protest has been lengthy, and our discussions with the Chief Minister were extensive. We insisted on a specific date for the farm loan waiver, leading to a two-hour conversation that concluded with the government’s assurance of a waiver before June 30. We trust the government will honor its commitment.”
