Bhopal, Oct 7 (NationPress) As the death toll from the Coldrif syrup tragedy in Chhindwara and Betul districts continues to rise, now totaling 17 with the passing of another child on Tuesday, the opposition Congress has intensified its criticism of the BJP-led Madhya Pradesh government.
The head of the state Congress unit, Jitu Patwari, visited Chhindwara on Monday to meet with grieving families of children who allegedly succumbed to consuming Coldrif Cough Syrup. During a press conference in Bhopal on Tuesday, he asserted that administrative corruption led to this heartbreaking incident.
"This tragedy not only reveals the stark reality of health services in Madhya Pradesh but also highlights systemic administrative failures and high-level corruption within the state government. Hospitals and pharmacies are dispensing duplicate or toxic medications, which cannot occur without kickbacks," Patwari claimed.
He pointed out that children continued to perish while senior health officials failed to take swift action. "Why didn't Health Minister (Deputy CM) Rajendra Shukla conduct an on-site inspection when reports of children's deaths emerged over the past two weeks? He instead contended that Coldrif Syrup was not responsible for these fatalities," Patwari stated.
The Congress leader questioned why Chief Minister Mohan Yadav had not taken action against Shukla and the Principal Secretary of the Health Department. He also wondered why the Chhindwara collector was transferred after ordering a halt to the sale of Coldrif Cough Syrup.
"The situation might not have escalated had the Chhindwara collector not been reassigned. If the collector was transferred, why hasn't the Chief Minister taken action against the Principal Secretary of Health? The government is merely attempting a cover-up; Rajendra Shukla should have been removed from the cabinet," Patwari added.
He announced that the Congress would hold a candlelight vigil on October 9 (Wednesday) in Bhopal and other regions across the state to mourn the loss of 17 children. Patwari mentioned that 25 families from Chhindwara and Betul districts are enduring this tragic ordeal, with 17 children deceased and at least seven still hospitalized in Nagpur.
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav also visited Chhindwara on Monday to meet families of children who reportedly died after ingesting the contaminated syrup, Coldrif. He ordered the suspension of three officials—Shobhit Kosta, the Deputy Drug Controller (Bhopal), along with Drug Inspectors Sharad Jain (Jabalpur) and Gaurav Sharma (Chhindwara). The Food and Drug Controller, Denesh Kumar Morya, has also been transferred.
Most of the children, primarily under the age of five, tragically died from kidney failure over the past month after consuming the cough medicine branded as Coldrif syrup, which was found to contain the toxin diethylene glycol at levels nearly 500 times the permissible limit, according to testing results.
