Chennai, March 24 (NationPress) The Madurai district police are actively searching for individuals implicated in the murder of a notorious criminal, P. Kaleeswaran, who was viciously attacked and killed on March 22 in Thanakkankulam, within the jurisdiction of the Perungudi police station.
Kaleeswaran, aged 37, was a suspect in two murder investigations and had engaged in numerous other illegal activities.
He was reportedly associated with a gang connected to the former Madurai Corporation zonal chairman and local DMK leader, V.K. Gurusamy.
A known criminal, Kaleeswaran had a history of offenses recorded at the Keeraithurai police station in Madurai city.
According to police reports, he was living in Mela Anupanadi, and about a month ago, his wife relocated to a new home in Venkalamoorthi Nagar, Madurai.
Kaleeswaran visited her on Saturday evening, and around 9:30 p.m., as he left to go to a nearby shop, he was ambushed by a gang of four.
The assailants, armed with weapons, inflicted multiple wounds on him before escaping the scene on two motorcycles. Kaleeswaran succumbed to his injuries at the scene, with initial investigations suggesting that gang rivalry was the motive behind his murder.
Authorities are currently seeking to apprehend individuals who had previous conflicts with Kaleeswaran and his gang.
Sources from the Madurai police have indicated that two suspects are already in custody and are undergoing interrogation regarding the case.
This murder occurs amid growing public and political pressure concerning the rising tide of violent crime in Tamil Nadu.
Just days prior to this incident, Director General of Police Shankar Jiwal had issued a directive to district police heads, cautioning them about the increasing frequency of homicides and serious crimes across the state.
The DGP stressed that officers failing to take action against anti-social elements and criminals would face severe consequences.
This warning came after the murder of retired Sub-Inspector Zakir Hussain in Tirunelveli on March 18, just months after he filed a complaint expressing concerns for his safety. Hussain had also shared a video on social media, alerting about the threats he faced.
The murder of the retired officer ignited widespread public and political outrage.
In response, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin assured the state Assembly that those involved in Hussain's murder would be brought to justice.
The DGP reiterated, 'No one will evade the law.' Following this incident, Tamil Nadu police have been instructed to closely monitor social media platforms and promptly respond to posts indicating threats to life or public safety.
Officers neglecting to act on such warnings will face disciplinary measures.
Meanwhile, the Organised Crime Intelligence Unit at the DGP's office has been collecting intelligence on active offenders, and stern warnings have been issued to those providing shelter or assistance to anti-social elements—including businessmen and politicians—indicating that legal action would be taken against them.
