Mumbai, July 10 (NationPress) Maharashtra Industry Minister Uday Samant announced on Thursday in the state assembly that the government is actively working to secure homes for textile mill workers in Mumbai and surrounding regions, contingent on land availability.
He emphasized that the government aims to ensure that no qualifying mill worker is left without housing.
“The initiative to construct residences for mill workers in the city of Mumbai and nearby locations was decided during a meeting chaired by Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde today,” he remarked.
“A plan will be established to assign a quota for housing textile mill workers within the slum rehabilitation projects. Additionally, we are requesting assistance from the Centre to provide homes for these workers on the salt pans in Mumbai, as the government strives to deliver justice to them,” the minister stated.
Minister Samant noted that following a commitment made after visiting the mill workers' protest at Azad Maidan, a discussion took place in the Vidhan Bhavan today, led by Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde along with representatives from mill workers' organizations.
During this meeting, several resolutions were made concerning housing for the workers.
“Mill workers are not obligated to purchase homes in Shelu. There has been a spread of misinformation regarding this, as no such mandate has been established. The decision to buy houses in Shelu is entirely voluntary for the mill workers. Furthermore, the entitlement for textile mill workers who choose not to purchase homes in 2024 will remain intact, and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has also resolved to revoke point number 17 from the government's previous decision on this matter,” concluded Minister Samant.
