Maha Kumbh 2025: Government Enhances Telecom Infrastructure for Uninterrupted Communication

New Delhi, Jan 2 (NationPress) As the nation prepares for Maha Kumbh 2025, the government revealed on Thursday that it has undertaken extensive measures to guarantee uninterrupted communication for the millions of devotees and tourists. This includes upgrades to telecom infrastructure throughout the city, Mela area, and essential public locations in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh.
To facilitate a smooth experience for the expected visitors from January 13 to February 26, the Mela period, a total of 126 km of optical fiber has been installed across the Prayagraj city area, bolstering the telecom infrastructure backbone, according to the Ministry of Communications.
Additionally, 328 new towers/masts have been erected to further enhance coverage throughout the urban region, as stated by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT).
Approximately 575 new base transceiver stations (BTS) across various mobile technologies have been rolled out, along with upgrades to 1,462 existing BTS units, ensuring strong and continuous connectivity during the Mela, according to the DoT.
Telecom service providers have been mandated to implement advanced technology and optimize networks to accommodate the substantial influx of attendees expected at this global religious event.
To meet the high demand, 78 CoWs (Transportable Towers) and 150 outdoor Small Cell solutions are being deployed to ensure reliable communication in congested areas.
The addition of 352 new BTS units, alongside the upgrade of 50 existing BTS units, will further strengthen telecom services in the Mela area, providing efficient connectivity for both devotees and visitors, as stated by the ministry.
Telecom services are also being optimized at critical public locations, including major transportation hubs such as railway stations, bus stations, and airports, in addition to holding areas, parking lots, and highways leading to and from Prayagraj.
According to the DoT, “Special emphasis has been placed on the Green Corridor, a vital route for the smooth flow of traffic, ensuring consistent network service in high-traffic areas.”
To enhance public safety and convenience, telecom providers have established 53 help desks across the Mela area.
These desks will assist with services such as reporting suspected fraudulent communications and blocking lost or stolen mobile devices.
Testing for electro-magnetic radiation has been conducted to ensure that all telecom towers operate within acceptable radiation limits, thus protecting public health.
Furthermore, a Cell Broadcast Alert system and a Common Alerting Protocol (CAP) integrated platform will be implemented to disseminate emergency alerts, disaster warnings, and general public awareness messages throughout the Mela period.
The government announced that three disaster management centers, operated by all four telecom service providers—Airtel, BSNL, Jio, and Vi—have been established in the Mela area to facilitate emergency communications and ensure a swift response during any crisis.
