Mumbai, July 21 (NationPress) The Chief Minister's Relief Fund will facilitate medical treatment for economically disadvantaged patients in Maharashtra through a groundbreaking initiative involving crowdfunding and a tripartite agreement, as announced by the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) on Monday.
The initiative aims to garner support from corporate entities, private donors, and hospitals, potentially benefiting thousands of patients in need.
A formal tripartite agreement is set to be established to ensure expensive medical treatments are accessible to those who are financially strained and in dire need across the state.
“This is the first time in Maharashtra that crowdfunding for medical treatment is being initiated via the Chief Minister's Relief Fund. Patients facing severe health issues with treatment costs exceeding Rs 10 lakhs will be eligible for this crowdfunding initiative. These patients will need to submit their applications through a dedicated portal created by the Chief Minister's Relief Fund cell, which will be operational within three months. Given the exorbitant costs of medical treatments, crowdfunding will be crucial,” stated the Chief Minister’s Office in a release.
A regulatory framework will be established to assess patient eligibility and ensure a transparent process. This initiative will serve as a significant lifeline for patients in both rural and urban settings. The Chief Minister's Medical Relief Fund has recently acquired FCRA (Foreign Contribution Regulation Act) approval, enabling it to accept international donations.
This approval will facilitate direct financial contributions from foreign donors and institutions, as well as CSR funds from corporations.
Notably, the Chief Minister's Relief Fund Cell has become the first in the nation to secure FCRA certification, allowing it to utilize these foreign funds for the treatment of underprivileged patients,” stated the CMO.
“The involvement of charitable hospitals in this initiative is paramount. In exchange for tax benefits from the government, these hospitals are required to reserve 10% of their total beds free of charge for families earning up to Rs 1.80 lakh annually. Additionally, 10% of beds will be available for families with an annual income of up to Rs 3.60 lakh at reduced rates. This arrangement will facilitate access to treatments at prestigious hospitals for impoverished patients. From January 1 to June 30, 2025, a total of 14,651 patients received assistance amounting to Rs 128.66 crore from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund Cell.
