Mahakal Temple earns ₹144 crore in FY26, Laddu Prasad leads revenue
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Shri Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga Temple in Ujjain has recorded revenues of approximately ₹144.14 crore in the financial year 2025-26, cementing its status as one of India's most financially significant pilgrimage destinations. The figure marks a new high for the ancient shrine, driven largely by surging footfall since the inauguration of the Mahakal Lok corridor in 2022.
Key Revenue Sources
According to the Mahakal Temple Administration, Laddu Prasad sales emerged as the single largest contributor, generating around ₹65 crore. Donations through hundis (donation boxes) followed closely at ₹62 crore. Other streams included ₹5.5 crore from the cash counter, ₹3.8 crore in direct cash collections, ₹3.6 crore from online donations, and ₹3 crore from fields. An additional ₹1.23 lakh was received through money orders.
The Mahakal Lok Effect
The revenue surge is directly linked to the transformation of the temple precinct following the Mahakal Lok development project. Before 2022, the temple received an average of 50,000 devotees daily. Post-development, daily footfall has risen substantially, pushing both prasad sales and hundi donations to record levels. The temple's physical footprint has also expanded dramatically — from 2.82 hectares to nearly 47 hectares — enabling better infrastructure, security, and pilgrim facilities.
Year-on-Year Growth Trend
Donation data over recent years underscores the upward trajectory. Donations stood at ₹38.91 crore in 2022-23, climbed to ₹59.91 crore in 2023-24, and moderated to ₹51.22 crore in 2024-25. The current year's total has already surpassed all prior benchmarks, with officials noting that the final FY26 figures are expected to rise further as the financial year progresses.
Operations and Expenditure
Temple authorities noted that rising revenues have been accompanied by increased spending on devotee amenities, security arrangements, maintenance, and staff welfare. The temple currently employs 306 staff members to manage daily operations. Funds are being channelled into further development of the shrine complex, with the dual aim of enhancing the pilgrim experience and preserving the sanctity of the 1,200-year-old Jyotirlinga.
Significance of the Shrine
The Mahakaleshwar Temple is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas dedicated to Lord Shiva and attracts millions of pilgrims annually from across India and abroad. Its growing revenue base reflects not just devotee faith but also the multiplier effect of large-scale religious infrastructure investment — a model that has drawn attention from temple administrations in other states.
