Mumbai, April 1 (NationPress) The Maharashtra Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, has officially sanctioned the rollout of e-bike taxis across the state.
Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik announced that the Cabinet has endorsed the state transport department's initiative aimed at reducing air pollution while simultaneously creating job opportunities.
In the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), the launch of e-bike taxis is projected to generate 10,000 jobs, with an additional 15,000 jobs expected in other parts of Maharashtra, totaling 25,000 jobs, he stated.
As per the minister, bike taxis already operate in 22 states throughout the nation.
Minister Sarnaik indicated that the fare for e-bike taxis is anticipated to be around Rs 3 per kilometer, which will be significantly cheaper than the rates of Ola, Uber, traditional kaali-peeli taxis, and auto-rickshaws, thereby lowering travel expenses for citizens.
“To ensure women’s safety, a comprehensive policy has been established, including essential guidelines. A partition between the driver and passenger is compulsory. During the monsoon season, e-bikes can be fitted with a temporary cover. Furthermore, it is mandatory for the bikes to have a GPS system. The pillion rider must wear a helmet, and the e-bike taxis will be painted yellow,” the minister elaborated.
Interestingly, e-bike taxi services were included in the Chief Minister’s 100-day action plan.
The minister revealed that the transport department is considering offering a grant of Rs 10,000 to the children of kaali-peeli taxi drivers to assist in the acquisition of e-bike taxis. This grant will be disbursed through the Rickshaw Mahamandal fund.
