Mumbai, April 8 (NationPress) The Maharashtra Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, has officially approved the formation of a State Institute of Disaster Management (SIDM) in Nagpur, modeled after the National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM).
To efficiently tackle both natural and human-induced disasters within the state, the SIDM will oversee the planning and management of disaster readiness, risk mitigation, post-disaster relief, rehabilitation, reconstruction, and response training.
A dedicated ten acres of land has been allocated for the institute at the Maharashtra Airport Development Authority (MIHAN) located in Nagpur.
The Cabinet has sanctioned Rs 187.73 crore for the construction of the institute's building. Additionally, it has approved the hiring of both regular and contractual positions, as well as technical consultants and necessary personnel to fulfill the institute's operational needs.
The State Executive Committee, under the leadership of the Chief Secretary, will serve as the governing body for this institution.
In a related development, the Chief Minister inaugurated the advanced State Emergency Operation Center at Mantralaya.
“Disaster management has enhanced its capabilities through the incorporation of modern technology, rapid communication systems, and artificial intelligence (AI) in the State Emergency Operation Center. This newly established center will facilitate quick, precise, and coordinated responses during disasters. The application of cutting-edge technology will improve not only disaster response but also pre-disaster awareness and rehabilitation efforts,” he stated.
The Chief Minister noted that climate change is altering the nature, intensity, and frequency of disasters.
“Thus, prioritizing mitigation and immediate response following incidents is essential. A robust command and communication system for disaster management is crucial, and this center will aid in swift decision-making and responses. Efforts are ongoing to establish such a modern system in every district across the state,” he remarked.
He emphasized that Maharashtra is at the forefront of strengthening institutional frameworks for disaster management.
Furthermore, a mobile application titled 'Disaster Assistant' has been launched for the public, enabling citizens to send SOS alerts during emergencies.
“This app will serve as a vital channel for two-way communication. All relevant information, guidelines, and activities related to disaster management are readily accessible on the new website of the State Disaster Management Authority, fostering greater coherence between citizens, local government, and the system,” he added.
