How Did the Maha Govt Secure Maratha Commander Raghuji Bhosale’s Sword?

Mumbai, Aug 11 (NationPress) The sword belonging to Raghuji Bhosale, the founder of the Nagpur Bhosale dynasty and a significant commander in the Maratha army during the era of Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj, was successfully secured by the Maharashtra Government in an auction. On Monday, Cultural Affairs Minister Ashish Shelar took custody of the sword in London.

This remarkable 'Firangi' sword is distinguished for several reasons. Unlike most medieval Maratha weapons that typically lack ornate details or maker inscriptions, this sword features both intricate designs and the owner’s name. Additionally, its European-made blade highlights the vibrant international arms trade that existed in 18th-century India.

News regarding this historic sword being auctioned surfaced unexpectedly on April 28, 2025, generating significant interest throughout Maharashtra.

Upon hearing this, Minister Shelar promptly consulted Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to strategize on securing the sword for the government.

By reaching out to the Indian Embassy and working tirelessly, Fadnavis and Shelar established an efficient coordination network.

Following the Chief Minister’s directives, the minister quickly enlisted an intermediary to ensure the state government was actively involved in the auction, ultimately winning the bid, as per a statement from the minister's office.

On Monday, in London, Shelar met the intermediary who facilitated the acquisition of the sword for the Maharashtra government, finalized the legal processes, and took possession of this historic piece.

This acquisition marks a significant milestone as it is the first time the state has procured a historic artifact from abroad through an auction.

Shelar expressed his pride in bringing this invaluable piece into Maharashtra's collection, referring to it as a historic triumph for the entire state.

After all legal formalities are completed, the sword is set to arrive at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, Mumbai, at 10 am on Monday, August 18.

A bike rally will escort the sword with great excitement to PL Deshpande Kala Academy, Dadar, where a program titled 'Gad Garjana' will take place in the presence of esteemed guests.

Raghuji Bhosale I (1695 - February 14, 1755) was a pivotal figure as the founder of the Nagpur Bhosale dynasty and a key commander in the Maratha army during the reign of Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj.

Known as one of the most audacious Maratha commanders of the 18th century, Raghuji Bhosale’s kingdom in Nagpur was rich in iron and copper, which were essential for producing goods and weapons.

The royal armory of the Nagpur Bhosales showcased an exquisite blend of craftsmanship and sophistication.

In 1817, the Nagpur Bhosales confronted the British East India Company in Sitabuldi.

After the Company's victory, the Bhosale treasury was plundered, losing numerous treasures, jewels, and weapons.

Once Nagpur was annexed, the British continued to receive tributes and gifts from the Bhosales.

Experts suggest that Raghuji Bhosale’s sword may have departed India either as part of war spoils or as a gift to the British.
