The Vasai-Virar City Municipal Corporation (VVCMC) has extended accident insurance coverage of up to ₹10 lakh per participant to approximately 8,000 Govindas registered across 118 teams ahead of the Dahi Handi (Gopal Kala) festival, celebrated this year on Saturday, 7 September. The initiative, driven by the corporation's Sports Department, marks one of the more structured safety interventions by a Maharashtra civic body for the festival.

What the Scheme Covers

Under the Gopal Kala Accident Insurance Scheme, every Govinda who registered with a participating team before the 3 September deadline receives free accident insurance protection worth up to ₹10 lakh. The cover is designed to address the specific hazards of Dahi Handi — particularly falls from human pyramids that can reach significant heights — as well as other injuries sustained during the formation of human towers.

All 8,000 registered participants across the VVCMC area have been brought under the scheme at no cost to the Govindas or their teams.

Response Higher Than Last Year

According to the civic body, the registration response this year surpassed last year's figures, signalling growing awareness among Govinda teams about the value of accident protection during the festival. A total of 118 Govinda teams registered their members within the deadline set by the corporation.

Notably, the uptick in registrations suggests that safety messaging by the administration is beginning to take hold among communities that have traditionally viewed the festival as a test of physical daring over institutional safeguards.

Why This Matters

Dahi Handi involves teams of Govindas forming multi-tiered human pyramids to reach and break an earthen pot filled with curd, suspended at heights that can exceed 30 to 40 feet at competitive events. Injuries — ranging from fractures to spinal trauma — are not uncommon, and fatalities have been recorded in past editions across Maharashtra.

The Supreme Court of India has previously issued guidelines on minimum age and maximum pyramid height for Dahi Handi events. Civic bodies providing insurance cover adds another layer of protection, particularly for Govindas from lower-income households who may lack private health or accident coverage.

VVCMC's Appeal to Participants

The Vasai-Virar City Municipal Corporation has urged all Govinda teams, organisers, and citizens to celebrate Dahi Handi with enthusiasm while adhering to discipline and following prescribed safety measures. The administration's broader message is that the festival's spirit need not come at the cost of participant safety.

With registrations closed and coverage activated, all eyes now turn to how effectively the insurance mechanism responds in the event of claims — a test that will shape whether other Maharashtra civic bodies replicate the model in future years.
