Majbat Railway Station revamped under Amrit Bharat scheme, 50 Assam stations in pipeline
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Majbat Railway Station in Assam's Udalguri district has been comprehensively redeveloped under the Centre's Amrit Bharat Railway Station Scheme, with passengers welcoming upgraded facilities ranging from air-conditioned waiting rooms to lifts and free Wi-Fi. The revamped station is expected to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the coming days.
What Has Changed at Majbat Station
The redeveloped station features a new station building, a spacious circulating and parking area, a newly constructed Foot Over Bridge (FOB) for easier inter-platform access, and improved waiting halls. Passengers can now access air-conditioned waiting rooms, better seating arrangements, clean drinking water filters, and upgraded passenger information systems.
Additional infrastructure additions include lifts, free Wi-Fi connectivity, an executive lounge, and enhanced lighting across the premises. New train stoppages at the station have also been announced as part of the redevelopment package.
What Passengers Said
Commuters who spoke to reporters at the station praised the visible transformation. 'Compared to before, more seating arrangements have been provided. Clean drinking water filters have been installed. Fans and other facilities have been arranged, which are much better than before. Cleanliness at the station has also improved a lot compared to earlier,' one passenger said.
Another traveller described the scale of the upgrade: 'A new building, a new entrance gate, and a newly developed platform have been built at Majbat Railway Station. Additionally, lifts, Wi-Fi facilities and other things have been brought in to redevelop this station. It has become like an airport.' The passenger also noted that improved connectivity had benefited local businesses and tourism in the region.
A third commuter added: 'The station looks very beautiful and has become very modern. Facilities have improved from every side. There are lights, lifts, and every kind of facility.'
Assam and Northeast Under the Amrit Bharat Scheme
Majbat's overhaul is part of a broader national push to modernise railway infrastructure. Under the Amrit Bharat Railway Station Scheme, 50 railway stations in Assam are being redeveloped, with a focus on passenger convenience, improved accessibility, and modern amenities.
Across the Northeast Frontier Railway zone, 92 stations have been identified for redevelopment, of which 60 are being actively upgraded. The breakdown includes 50 stations in Assam, four in Tripura, and one station each in Sikkim, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram, and Nagaland.
One Station One Product and Local Economy
Beyond infrastructure, the scheme incorporates the 'One Station One Product' initiative, which creates dedicated retail space at redeveloped stations for locally produced goods. This component is designed to link railway modernisation with grassroots economic activity, giving regional artisans and small businesses a direct market channel at high-footfall transit points.
What Comes Next
With the Prime Minister's inauguration of Majbat Station expected shortly, attention will turn to the pace of redevelopment at the remaining stations across the Northeast Frontier Railway zone. The completion timeline for all 60 stations under active upgrade has not yet been officially announced.
