Kannur, Oct 9 (NationPress) A devastating fire engulfed a prominent commercial complex in Thaliparamba, Kannur, on Wednesday evening, resulting in the destruction of over 50 businesses and incurring estimated losses of several crores.

Fortunately, no casualties were reported despite the extensive property damage.

The fire, which ignited at approximately 4:55 p.m., was finally brought under control after a grueling three and a half hours of firefighting efforts.

Initial reports indicate that the blaze originated in a toy store named “Mitreds”, situated in the KV Complex, near the municipal bus stand along the national highway.

Within moments, the flames rapidly spread to neighboring shops, including textile outlets, mobile stores, and a supermarket.

The KV Complex is known as one of Thaliparamba’s bustling commercial centers, housing numerous shops, offices, and jewelry stores.

Local residents expressed concerns over the delayed response from the fire department, stating it took over 30 minutes for the first unit to arrive.

By that time, the fire had already consumed a significant portion of the complex.

Twelve firefighting units from Kannur, Payyannur, Thalassery, Koothuparamba, Mattannur, Iritty, and surrounding areas were ultimately mobilized to extinguish the flames.

More than 30 establishments, including the two-story Shalimar Supermarket, faced complete destruction.

Additionally, gas cylinders within some shops exploded, further fueling the fire's rapid spread.

Firefighters faced challenges in preventing the blaze from reaching the upper levels of Jayafashion Jewellery, a well-known local business.

The intense heat shattered glass windows on buildings across the street.

Traffic along the national highway was halted and subsequently diverted through Pazhayangadi.

Fire officials suspect that a short circuit ignited the fire. This incident has highlighted serious concerns regarding emergency preparedness and fire safety protocols in the region's commercial areas. An investigation is currently in progress.
