Kolkata, Sep 20 (NationPress) The tradition within the Trinamool Congress of likening West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to the great spiritual leaders of the nation continues, with party Rajya Sabha member Ritabrata Banerjee being the latest to make this comparison.
At a public rally in Bangaon, located in the North 24 Parganas district, on Saturday, Ritabrata Banerjee addressed the alleged mistreatment of Bengali-speaking individuals in BJP-ruled regions and referred to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee as an incarnation of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.
"Mamata Banerjee is the only leader in India who has unified people against communal and caste-based politics. Much like Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, millions of individuals follow our Chief Minister because of her actions. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu transcended the limitations of caste and religion, attracting countless followers. In the same vein, millions now attend rallies led by our Chief Minister. Therefore, she can be seen as a modern incarnation of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu," he stated.
This is not the first occasion on which the Chief Minister has been likened to renowned spiritual figures.
In December 2023, State Education Minister Bratya Basu also referred to Chief Minister Banerjee as an incarnation of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, arguing that both advocate for the unity of all religions and inclusiveness.
In the same month, Trinamool Congress General Secretary Kunal Ghosh compared Mamata Banerjee to Ramakrishna Paramhansa and her nephew, party General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee, to Swami Vivekananda.
Ghosh remarked, "If Mamata Banerjee represents Ramakrishna Paramhansa, then Abhishek Banerjee embodies Swami Vivekananda. Just as Ramakrishna had numerous followers, Vivekananda was his most celebrated disciple. The people of Bengal wish to see the legacy of Mamata Banerjee reflected in Abhishek Banerjee, appreciating her contributions and sacrifices for the community."
Previously, in June 2022, Nirmal Maji, a three-time Trinamool Congress MLA from Uluberia (North) in Howrah district, had referred to Mamata Banerjee as the "incarnation of Maa Sarada," the wife and spiritual companion of Ramakrishna Paramahansa.
Maji even claimed that days before Swami Vivekananda's passing, Maa Sarada had told some of his followers that she would be reborn in Kalighat, close to the renowned Kali Temple.
Interestingly, Banerjee's residence is near this very temple.
The Belur Math, the headquarters of the Ramakrishna Math and Mission, strongly opposed Maji's comments.
In July of the previous year, Biswajit Das, the MLA from Bagda Assembly constituency in North 24 Parganas, compared the Chief Minister to Rani Rashmoni, the esteemed philanthropist and founder of the iconic Dakhineswar Kali temple near Kolkata, which is famous for its connection to Ramakrishna Paramahansa.
