Advocacy for district tribunals for managing voter inclusion.

Kolkata, March 27 (NationPress) Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, stated on Friday that the liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) produced within the state should remain within its borders until the ongoing crisis regarding LPG supply is addressed.

She expressed concerns that the widespread transfers, replacements, and assignments of bureaucrats and police personnel from West Bengal to other states by the Election Commission of India (ECI) could increase the likelihood of the state's LPG being distributed outside its territory.

“It is essential that the LPG generated in West Bengal does not leave the state during this crisis. The risk exists due to the large-scale movement of bureaucrats and police prior to the elections. Additionally, electoral officials and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) will be deployed in significant numbers for the upcoming Assembly elections. The residents of our state should not be deprived of the LPG necessary for their cooking needs,” she remarked to journalists outside the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata before embarking on a campaign trip to Andal in West Burdwan district.

During her address, she also criticized the ECI concerning the alleged removal of names from the voters' list in the initial supplementary list recently released for judicial review.

“The Supreme Court mandated the release of supplementary lists. They assert that the first supplementary list has been published. However, we are yet to receive physical copies of these lists. This represents a grave injustice to democracy and is extremely regrettable,” she stated.

She emphasized that accountability will eventually be sought from those responsible for this situation.

“If they possess any integrity, they should transparently disclose the list. The public deserves to know whether their names are included or not. Every district should establish a tribunal for managing the inclusion of names in the voter registry. Is this nation merely the personal domain of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)?” she questioned.

Point of View

The Chief Minister's remarks underscore the importance of local resources during a crisis. Her call for retaining LPG within West Bengal highlights a broader concern over resource management and electoral integrity amid bureaucratic changes.
