Kolkata, March 5 (NationPress) In a surprising development, the legal representative for West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who was engaged in a defamation lawsuit initiated by Governor C.V. Ananda Bose at the Calcutta High Court, has undergone a change.

The current counsel, Sanjay Basu, has been replaced by Kalyan Banerjee, a senior advocate of the Calcutta High Court and a four-time Lok Sabha member from the Trinamool Congress.

This change has been communicated to the Division Bench, presided over by Chief Justice T.S. Sivagnanam, by the esteemed law firm Fox & Mandal.

The firm has also urged the Chief Justice’s Bench not to proceed with any decisions regarding the case without their prior notice.

Last year, a controversy erupted surrounding the oath-taking ceremony of two newly-elected Trinamool Congress legislators, Sayantika Banerjee from the Baranagar constituency in North 24 Parganas and Reyat Houssen Sarkar from Bhagabangola in Murshidabad.

Governor Bose demanded that both legislators come to the Raj Bhawan for their oath ceremony, while Banerjee and Sarkar insisted that he administer the oath at the West Bengal Assembly.

The issue escalated, leading to various Trinamool Congress leaders, including the Chief Minister, criticizing the Governor. This included statements from the two new legislators and the party's state general secretary, Kunal Ghosh.

Subsequently, the Governor filed a defamation suit in the Calcutta High Court against these four individuals, with the Chief Minister’s name listed first.

Until now, Sanjay Basu, who operates his own law firm, represented the Chief Minister in this defamation case. From now on, Kalyan Banerjee will take over as counsel for the Chief Minister.
