Bhopal, Nov 28 (NationPress) A man has been apprehended in connection with the alleged rape of a six-year-old girl in the Raisen district of Madhya Pradesh, following a brief encounter in Bhopal on Friday.
As per Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Kamlesh Kharpuse, the suspect, Salman, was taken into custody between 3:30 a.m. and 4:00 a.m. in Bhopal.
The ASP noted that while transporting Salman to Gauharganj, their vehicle suffered a punctured tire.
In a turn of events, the suspect attempted to escape.
"During the transfer to another vehicle, the accused made an effort to seize the firearm of SI Shyam Singh and attempted to discharge it. In response, police fired at his leg, resulting in an injury," ASP Kharpuse stated.
Salman was subsequently admitted to Hamidia Hospital in Bhopal for medical attention.
To safeguard the accused, extensive security has been arranged outside Hamidia Hospital.
He will be escorted to Raisen post-treatment for his bullet wound.
The arrest occurred six days subsequent to the alleged assault of the six-year-old girl in the Gauharganj vicinity of Raisen district, which incited widespread public outrage.
Authorities enforced prohibitory orders on Thursday.
Violent protests erupted in the area on Wednesday, with local residents and members of various Hindu organizations demonstrating in different parts of the district.
On Thursday, police asserted that the situation in the Gauharganj area was under control.
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav convened a high-level meeting at Police Headquarters on Tuesday with senior officials, including the Director General of Police (DGP) and Chief Secretary, to mandate necessary actions.
Expressing dissatisfaction over the incident, the Chief Minister reassigned Raisen SP Vivek Pandey.
The six-year-old victim was assaulted on November 21 in Raisen district.
The girl is currently receiving care at AIIMS, Bhopal, and is gradually recovering.
On Wednesday, State Congress president Jitu Patwari visited AIIMS to meet the family of the victim.
