Indore, Oct 25 (NationPress) In a troubling incident that has raised alarms about women's safety in Indore, Madhya Pradesh Police apprehended Aqeel, a 28-year-old from Azad Nagar, for allegedly molesting two Australian women cricketers who were staying at a renowned hotel during the ICC Women's World Cup.
According to police reports, the incident transpired around 11 am on Thursday while the athletes were heading to a cafe located approximately half a kilometer from their hotel.
The players swiftly issued an SOS alert. They reached out to their team security officer, Danny Simmons, who coordinated with local security personnel and dispatched a vehicle for help. Additionally, the Australian team's security manager lodged a complaint at the MIG police station.
Upon receiving the report, senior police officials met with the players, documented their statements, and filed a First Information Report under Section 74 (use of criminal force to outrage a woman's modesty) and Section 78 (stalking) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at the MIG police station.
A police spokesperson mentioned that a bystander recorded the motorcycle number of the suspect, leading to the capture of Aqeel Khan.
He was arrested late on Friday, and an ongoing investigation is underway, according to police statements on Saturday.
Authorities indicated that Aqeel, riding a black motorcycle, approached the players, slowed down, and inappropriately touched them before fleeing.
Frightened, one of the victims quickly contacted Danny Simmons, who informed hotel staff and the Vijay Nagar police station.
Coincidentally, a vigilant passerby noted the motorcycle's registration number during the harassment incident.
Using the vehicle registration provided by the eyewitness, a dedicated police team tracked down Aqeel at his Azad Nagar residence in North Indore and arrested him within four hours of the incident.
"The suspect's motorcycle matched the eyewitness's description and license plate," police confirmed.
However, this swift arrest highlights significant systemic issues. Police insiders admitted to an 'intelligence lapse' in the operation, noting that given the high-profile sporting event and the vulnerability of female cricketers, insufficient security measures were implemented around the hotel area.
No regular patrols or undercover officers were assigned to the popular route to the cafe, which is frequently used by the team.
The accused, Aqeel, works as a local delivery executive, and his vehicle has been confiscated. Further investigations are ongoing.
"Khan has previous criminal cases registered against him, and the investigation continues," police added.
