Manipur: Meitei Organization Appeals to Central Government for Dismantling Militant Structures

Imphal, Dec 3 (NationPress) The Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), a key organization of the Meitei community, has urged the central government to take necessary measures to fortify the India-Myanmar border and dismantle the facilities used by militant groups in the region.
The Media Coordinator of COCOMI, Yumkhaibam Surjitkumar Khuman, called on the Union Government to recognize the current crisis as a “proxy war” involving outside forces and governmental oversight.
“Immediate and decisive actions are required to secure the India-Myanmar border and dismantle the operational bases of armed militant factions in the state within a specified timeframe,” Khuman stated during a media briefing.
He emphasized the need for transparent investigations regarding claims of collusion between security forces and Kuki militant groups.
COCOMI also called for a comprehensive approach to tackle issues such as illegal immigration, poppy cultivation, arms smuggling, and drug trafficking, while also advocating for the restoration of demographic equilibrium in Manipur.
In a statement, the Meitei apex body expressed that COCOMI has been closely observing the Indian government’s administrative actions related to Manipur since the onset of Kuki aggression on May 3, 2023.
“The crisis has now reached critical levels due to the Indian government’s clear inability to protect Manipur’s territorial integrity, allowing ethnic insurgent groups from Myanmar to take advantage and disrupt the stability of the area,” the statement indicated.
The statement further noted that the National Investigation Agency (NIA), through its recent investigations, revealed the involvement of Kuki militant factions such as KNA, KNF, and UKNA in severe criminal acts, including the murder of four civilians earlier this year.
“Despite these findings, the Indian government has not taken steps to dismantle the frameworks of these groups or to hold them accountable for their actions,” asserted COCOMI.
In related developments, the Manipur police apprehended four militants from the Kangleipak Communist Party (People's War Group) in the Kakching district, seizing a substantial cache of arms and ammunition.
A police official reported that these militants were implicated in extortion and illegal arms possession.
