Imphal, Dec 31 (NationPress) The Congress party in Manipur has emphasized that true peace and normalcy can only be achieved if the Assembly is disbanded and new elections are conducted.
Keisham Meghachandra Singh, the President of the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC), stated that lasting peace would be possible once the 60-member Assembly is dissolved, paving the way for a new mandate from the citizens.
“A newly elected government will be better equipped to manage the current challenges and restore peace, normalcy, and harmony among the diverse communities,” he told reporters.
While the nation celebrates the New Year with joy, the citizens of Manipur find themselves unable to partake in the festivities due to ongoing turmoil.
“The Congress has consistently called for the dissolution of the Assembly and fresh elections as the sole means to restore peace and normalcy in the state,” Singh, who also serves as a Congress MLA, remarked.
He highlighted that the current administration has failed to adequately address the ethnic crisis and the hopes and grievances of the populace.
Singh voiced optimism that the upcoming New Year in 2026 could usher in peace, harmony, clarity, and justice for Manipur if the government implements decisions that favor the people.

Efforts to rejuvenate public life included major cultural and sporting events, such as the Shirui Lily Festival from May 20-24, the 10-day Sangai Tourism Festival from November 21-30, the five-day Sangai Film Festival from November 24-28, the Orange Festival, and the 134th edition of the Durand Cup, Asia's oldest football tournament, held on July 30.
“Having organized these festivals successfully, I urge all communities to set aside differences and misunderstandings to help restore peace, normalcy, and cordial relations in the New Year,” said Robindro Singh, representing the Thanga constituency in the Meitei community-dominated Bishnupur district.
Following a period of intense ethnic violence, President's Rule was enacted in Manipur on February 13, 2025, just four days after N. Biren Singh resigned from his position as Chief Minister.
The 60-member Manipur Assembly, which is currently under suspended animation due to the imposition of President's Rule, remains in office until 2027.
